Tour Description

This tour coincides with Kakadu Bird Week 2018. Tour starts on 2nd Oct Only.

**Please note that we are not a specialist bird tour company and your guide is not a specialist birding guide but does have a good knowledge of the local birds. This itinerary has been designed to take you to the best spots to see the most amount of birdlife and the focus of the tour is to see birds and wildlife with other, like- minded enthusiasts **

Day 1 – Tues 2nd Oct 2018 (L)

You will be collected from your Darwin accommodation at 6.30am for your 5 day bird watching tour to Mary River, Kakadu and Katherine.

Our first stop today is Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, which is an hour from Darwin on the Arnhem Highway and we arrive nice and early when the birds are more active. Beautiful Fogg Dam is home to a large variety of animals and birds, which makes it internationally significant. 230 bird species have been listed in this area by The Australian Bird Atlas.

We have plenty of time here to view the birds from the dam wall and the lookouts and we can also take one of woodlands walks- the Monsoon Forest Walk (2.7km) or the Woodlands to Waterlily Walk (2.2km).

The wetland birds found in this area include Brolga, Jabiru, Comb Crested Jacana, Sacred Kingfishers and Royal Spoonbills and we may also see Crimson finches, Double Barred Finches, Rainbow Bee-Eaters and the Rainbow Pitta.

We continue towards Kakadu and subject to conditions, we visit either Leaning Tree Lagoon or Djukbinj National Park, as well as taking a drive down the Marrakai Track, where we may get some further bird viewing opportunities.

We check into our accommodation at the Mary River Wilderness Retreat and there may be time after lunch, to take a wander down to one of the nearby billabongs or take a walk around the garden grounds, which are home to a variety of birds as well as heaps of wallabies.

Mid-afternoon we’ll leave again for our 2 hour sunset cruise on Corroboree Billabong. The billabong is part of the Mary River, which, in the wet season, transforms into an inland sea where fish, crocodiles and birds breed and flourish. As the flood waters subside and the dry season takes over, we have fantastic wildlife and bird watching opportunities. Birds that can be found in the Mary River region include Gouldian Finch, Rufous Owl, Grey Goshawk, Great- Billed Heron, Black Bittern, Rainbow Pitta, Brolga, Jabiru, Kingfishers, Darters, Cormorants and Sea Eagles.

Dinner tonight is available for purchase at the lodge bistro.

Overnight accommodation- Mary River Wilderness Retreat – Bungalow with en-suite

Day 2– Wed 3rd Oct 2017 (B,L)

Today we make our way into World Heritage listed Kakadu National park, which is Australia’s largest national park and home to some of the world’s finest rock art, around one third of Australia’s bird species and a variety of animals that live in the diverse range of habitats, including floodplains and savannah woodlands.

Some birds are found throughout the park, but many are found in only one habitat, including the Chestnut-quilled Rock-Pigeon, Banded Fruit-Dove, White- Lined Honeyeater and the White-throated Grasswren, which are only found within certain areas in Kakadu.

Our first stop today are the beautiful Mamukala Wetlands, in the South Alligator Region. Home to an array of wetland birds including thousands of Magpie Geese, Wandering and Whistling Ducks, Green- Pygmy Geese and Australian Pelicans, the wetlands can be viewed from an observation platform.

Then onto Ubirr, in the very north of the park. As well as the fantastic galleries of aboriginal rock art, which your guide will interpret, it also offers a spectacular view over the Nadab floodplain and the Arnhemland escarpment, from the lookout at the end of the walk.

As well as offering fantastic rock art and spectacular views from the lookout, Ubirr is also home to the short-eared rock wallaby as well as a variety of birds including the Chestnut-Quilled Rock Pigeon, Banded Fruit- Dove, Whistling Kite and Bush Stone- Curlew.

The nearby Bardedjilidji Sandstone Walk ( a flat 2.5km) , will provide us further bird watching opportunities for the Torres Strait pigeon, sulphur-crested cockatoos and chestnut-quilled rock-pigeon as well as black wallaroo and short- beaked echidna on this walk, which are both endemic to the sandstone habitats in the area.
Dinner this evening can be purchased at the hotel restaurant

Overnight accommodation in Kakadu-Mercure Crocodile Hotel- hotel room with en-suite

Day 3– Thurs 4th Oct 2017 (B,L)

We spend this morning in the Nourlangie area, at Nourlangie Rock, Angbangbang Billabong and Nawalandja Lookout. Angbangbang Billabong offers great bird watching and a loop walk around the billabong maximises these opportunities. There are also great views of Nourlangie Rock behind the billabong and a woodland walk which will take us to Nawalandja Lookout.

Nourlangie Rock, an Aboriginal shelter, offers fantastic rock art, which you guide will interpret for you. As we explore the rock we may also see Black Wallaroo, Banded Fruit- Dove, White-Lined Honeyeater and the Chestnut-Quilled Rock Pigeon.

The afternoon is spent at Maguk (Barramundi Gorge and waterfall), which is reached by travelling along a picturesque dirt road, alongside heaps of termite mounds. We reach the car park and then take a walk through a paperbark forest and along a creek to reach the gorge, where we can have a swim in the plungepool and under the waterfall. The area is also home to Rainbow Pitta and Shining Flycatchers.

Our accommodation tonight is set in garden surrounds and after checking in, you my like to take a wander around or take a walk to the nearby Yellow Waters boardwalk.

Overnight accommodation in Kakadu- Kakadu Lodge Cooinda, motel room with en-suite

Day 4– Fri 5th Oct 2017 (B,L)

An early start today (but worth it) on an exclusive 2 hour sunrise Yellow Waters Billabong cruise for our group only. . The billabong is home to saltwater crocodiles and at least 60 bird species, as well as other wildlife.

Our final destination in the park is in the very south of Kakadu and we drive to Gunlom (Waterfall Creek), on an unsealed dirt road. Gunlom has a huge plunge pool which is great for a swim or you can walk to the top of the falls for a swim in the rockpools and a fantastic view over the surrounding country.

Birds you may see in the area include Rainbow Pitta,Buff- sided Robin, Chestnut- Quilled Rock Pigeon, White- Lined Honeyeaters and Sandstone Shrike Thrush.

We’ll leave Kakadu via the southern entry and travel south to Katherine, with stops en-route in historic Pine Creek and the Ferguson River- both great for bird watching including the rare Hooded Parrot, Rainbow Lorikeets, Blue Faced Honey Eaters and species of finch including the Blood Finch, Gouldian Finch, Masked Finch and Zebra Finch

We reach Katherine township and continue to Nitmiluk Gorge, where 13 spectacular gorges have been carved out of the rock by monsoonal rains, over millennia. The campground and gorge are home to a variety of birds and heaps of wallabies !

Dinner tonight is available to purchase at the poolside bistro

Overnight accommodation at Nitmiluk Gorge- 1 bedroom cabin with en-suite

Day 5 – Sat 6th Oct 2017 (B,L)

We start today with a 2 hour cruise through Nitmiluk Gorge, where you will learn of Jawoyn people culture and their connection to the gorge, while you relax and enjoy some beautiful scenery.

Heading north again, we now travel to Leilyn (Edith Falls) where you can have a swim in the large plungepool or take a walk over the falls to the rockpools above. Here you might spot Hooded Parrot, Gouldian, Long-Tailed and Masked Finches, Black-tailed Treecreeper and Golden-headed Cisticola.
