Easily accessible from Alice Springs, The West MacDonnell Ranges provides some spectacular natural scenery that has to be seen to be believed. Places like Simpson’s Gap, Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Serpentine Gorge, The Ochre Pits, Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen and Redbank Gorge are all known for their picturesque scenery, serenity and invigorating walks.

The West MacDonnell Ranges are a quintessential Aussie holiday destination and normally go together with a visit to Alice Springs – because of its easily accessible road, which allows visitors to gain access to spectacular scenery. Visitors are given a glimpse of an ancient landscape sculpted over eons by climatic conditions. The region is full of surprises like Palm Valley – which is a reminder that the area was once lush rainforest.

Within the West MacDonnell Ranges are a variety of scenic gaps offering spectacular scenery. Simpsons Gap is one of the most prominent gaps in the West MacDonnell Ranges. It features the towering cliffs of Simpsons Range, a permanent waterhole and opportunities to spot resident wildlife. The site is also a sacred spiritual place to the local Arrarnta Aboriginal people, which brings an air of mysticism to the area. Another stunning site not to be missed is the spectacular Standley Chasm, which cuts through the tough rock to form an amazing picturesque natural alleyway. This site is at its most impressive in the middle of a sunny day. As light shifts across the cleft, visitors are treated to a magnificent display of colours and forms. These sites are a small sample of the wonderful scenery that visitors can expect to see in the West MacDonnell ranges.
